Eating in Prague

Pop a squat with some coffee and enjoy the views!

Prague

It’s been so long since I wrote that post about Strawberry Lime Coconut Macaroons but I have a good excuse…

I just got back (sniffle sniffle) from a trip with my mom and my sister! We went to Eastern Europe on a Rick Steves tour and then spent a couple of days in Paris. We went to a lot of small towns in between but these are the major cities/towns we visited: Prague, Czech Republic; Krakow, Poland; Budapest, Hungary; Rovinj, Croatia; Lake Bled, Slovenia; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Paris, France.

I wasn’t sure what to expect for the food just because no one really talks about Eastern European food. But man the fattening that took place on this trip … dozens of macarons, gallons of café au lait, 3 cream cakes in one day (I know, I know), and oh-so-much strudel! I was so pleasantly surprised that I’m going to be posting a “Traveling Yumminess” series of my favorite restaurants and dessert experiences from Prague, Krakow, Budapest, and Paris!!

First up PRAGUE! The first thing we noticed is how incredibly reasonable the prices are right now. We were able to eat awesome meals for almost nothing! While we did hit all the big sites, my favorite part of Prague was sitting with coffee or strudel and enjoying the views of the city!

Café Savoy                                                                                                                                            Vítězná 5, Praha 5

Prague

Café Savoy is truly an experience. You step in the door and feel as if you’ve stepped back 100 years … which makes sense because it was established in 1893.

They do have a menu but we just went for dessert and coffee and man-oh-man it was good. I recommend the Savoy Café au lait which was coffee with cinnamon, chocolate, and milk. All I can say is YUM!Café Savoy Prague

Their dessert case is also gorgeous…I practically had my nose on the glass… okay okay I did have my nose on the glass.Café Savoy Prague

I’d recommend trying the Dort Savoy which was a chocolate cake with a thin cherry layer.Café Savoy Prague

Go to the bathroom before you leave … that sounded weird … let me explain… on the way to the bathroom there is a big window that looks into the pastry kitchen which is really neat…well I thought it was interesting. We were there later in the day so there wasn’t much going on but I bet in the morning it would be really neat to see.

Café Louvre                                                                                                                                   Národní 22, Praha 1

Café Louvre

Café Louvre is another historical cafe that was started in 1902. The interior is also ornately decorated. Their food is pretty traditional but they also offer great salads. I would recommend this restaurant as a dessert and coffee stop in the afternoon! They also had a separate menu for food allergies. While I liked this restaurant, if you only have time for one of these, I’d recommend Café Savoy over Café Louvre.

Susta Strudl

If any of you have watched Samantha Brown’s episode on Prague, you know what I’m talking about! This was one of my favorite experiences in Prague! You get a warm foot long strudel with either apple, curd, or poppy filling for about $2! I recommend the apple but my sister preferred the curd one. Susta Strudl is in a mostly residential part of town so it is good getaway from the tourism of downtown. We even saw some locals picking up a strudel on their way to work! What a life!! Can you imagine eating this yumminess every day… I would need to yoga (yes, I just made that a verb) more often but it would be worth it!

Susta Strudl

It is just a window that you order at and there isn’t seating so don’t go on a rainy day. I suggest taking your strudel up to the park because there is this awesome view:

Susta Strudl

Strudel and a view … can’t ask for much else!

How to get to Susta Strudl: Take the number 9 tram to the Biscupcova stop. Once you get off, walk back about 30 yards to the first cross street which is Jeseniova and take a right onto Jeseniova. Susta Strudl is about a 10 minute walk and will be on your right.

How to get to the park from Susta Strudl: Walk another 10 yards past the shop and there will be a staircase on your left across the street. Walk up the staircase and then turn right on the path at the top. There is some graffiti along that path but we felt safe during the day with locals around. The park will be on your left. Once you’re in the park, go to the top of the hill to get the best view. The picture below doesn’t show it but there were a lot of locals with their kids and their dogs in the park! Pop a squat on one of the benches to enjoy your strudel and the view!

Bellavista Prague

This is a great restaurant up near Prague castle and the monastery. They have a great outdoor eating area and spectacular views of the castle and old town Prague. The service was friendly and very willing to speak English with us. This was most definitely my favorite meal in Prague. There are both light and more filling options. I had the bruschetta which had this amazing balsamic vinegar reduction drizzle (I’m still drooling over it) and a chicken caesar salad and was real happy!

Brewery Prague

This is a brewery that is a 3 minute walk from the previous restaurant, Bellavista. They serve fresh, unpasteurized beer here. I will admit to knowing literally nothing about beer (my sister ordered her second choice for me) and I’d never really liked beer before because it tastes heavy to me out of the bottle. But this place spoiled me… it was so refreshing and light because it was so freshly brewed. They have a patio outside but if you walk inside, you can see a copper vat that they brew the beer in. You can take a tour and get samplers of different types but you have to book in advance. We just sat outside and each ordered one and tasted each others.
